Judge James Selna has officially awarded the full amount after initially considering reducing it to $17 million in January. The lawsuit centered on MGA Entertainment's LOL Surprise! doll line, which was found to have infringed on the intellectual property of the OMG Girlz group.
The final ruling maintains both the original $17.8 million in actual damages and $53.6 million in punitive damages. The court determined that seven dolls in the LOL Surprise! OMG dolls product line copied the likeness of the girl group trio.
Despite MGA Entertainment's denial of copyright infringement, the court found sufficient evidence to uphold the full damages amount. T.I. stated that the company "came and ripped us off, and expected us not to have the audacity to stand up and speak for ourselves."
Tiny Harris expressed gratitude on social media, writing "Don't play with God's children!" and thanking their legal team. She specifically acknowledged OMG Girlz members Bahja Rodriguez, Breaunna Womack, and her daughter Zonnique.
This landmark ruling sets a significant precedent for intellectual property protection in the entertainment and toy industries, particularly regarding the unauthorized use of artists' likenesses in commercial products.
