The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has launched an investigation into iHeartMedia over potential payola violations, particularly focusing on their live music events practices.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has issued a formal letter to iHeartMedia CEO Robert Pittman expressing concerns about the company potentially pressuring artists to perform without payment at events in exchange for airplay. The investigation specifically targets the upcoming iHeartCountry Festival, which will feature prominent artists like Brooks & Dunn, Rascal Flatts, Thomas Rhett, and Sam Hunt.

Key points of the investigation:

  • iHeartMedia must provide details about artist compensation
  • The company needs to disclose typical performance fees
  • Information about the relationship between event participation and airplay is required
  • Response deadline is set for 10 days

The probe follows a February 6 FCC advisory sparked by Senator Marsha Blackburn's (R-TN) payola accusations. Federal law requires broadcasters to disclose any arrangements where airplay is influenced by artist participation in station events.

iHeartMedia has responded stating they "look forward to demonstrating to the Commission how performing at the iHeartCountry Festival — or declining to do so — has no bearing on our stations' airplay."

The FCC is also extending its investigation to NPR and PBS regarding their on-air acknowledgment of financial sponsors and potential rule violations.
