The January 16-20, 2025 event, organized with Cimafunk and Cuba Educational Travel, brought together musicians, students, and industry professionals for collaborative performances and educational initiatives. Notable participants included Yola, Taj Mahal, Trombone Shorty, George Clinton, and Cuban folk hero Carlos Varela.

Key highlights included:

  • Cross-cultural panel discussions and performances
  • Mentorship sessions with established artists
  • Student collaborations between Trombone Shorty Academy and Cuban music students
  • Performance at Guillermo Tomas School of Music in Guanabacoa

The program has evolved from a simple cultural exchange to a full-fledged musical festival with significant philanthropic impact in both cities. "Getting Funky has grown to make a real difference in communities in Havana and New Orleans," says Collin Laverty, President of Cuba Educational Travel.

The foundation's efforts demonstrate how music can bridge geographical and political divides. As Carlos Varela notes, "Some people build walls, and some people build doors." The initiative continues with Shorty Fest in New Orleans on April 28.
