Saldívar shot 23-year-old Selena on March 31, 1995, at a Days Inn hotel in Corpus Christi after the singer confronted her about embezzling funds from her businesses. Despite fleeing the room, Selena was shot in the back with a .38 Taurus Model 85 revolver and later died at a local hospital from blood loss.
Though Saldívar claimed the shooting was accidental and that she had intended to kill herself, a jury convicted her of murder on October 23, 1995. She received a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice confirms Saldívar, now 64, is "in the Parole Review Process" at the Patrick L. O'Daniel Unit in Gatesville, Texas. Her parole eligibility date is March 25, 2025.
The six-month Texas parole process includes:
- Inmate interview
- Collection of support and protest letters
- Case summary compilation by an Institutional Parole Officer
- Final decision by the Board voting panel
According to the NY Post, Saldívar regularly receives death threats from other inmates. In a recent Peacock documentary, "Selena and Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them," she claimed she "was convicted by public opinion" before her trial began.
