Lil Wayne has announced he's releasing "something special" during Kendrick Lamar's upcoming Super Bowl LIX media appearance on February 6. The announcement comes after Wayne expressed disappointment about not being selected as the halftime performer in his hometown of New Orleans.

"Y'all know I'm not gon' be there this week," Wayne stated on Instagram. "I've been working on something very special. I've got something exciting coming for you. Thursday the 6th. 'Til then, I'm just chillin'."

The timing coincides with Kendrick Lamar's scheduled Apple Music Radio interview - only his second since his recent Drake beef. The situation is particularly noteworthy given K.Dot's recent lyrics on GNX referencing Wayne: "Used to bump Tha Carter III, I held my Rollie chain proud / Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down."

Wayne responded to these lyrics on social media, tweeting: "Man wtf I do? I just be chillin' and dey still kome 4 my head. Let's not take kindness for weakness. Let this giant sleep. I beg u all."

In a conversation with Skip Bayless, Wayne later clarified his feelings about both Kendrick's lyrics and being passed over for the Super Bowl performance: "He didn't let me down. There was no explanation needed for that. His hard work is the reason why he made it there, and obviously that part about letting me down is me being upset and disappointed about not getting that spot."

While many expected a New Orleans artist to headline given the location, the NFL has historically not prioritized hometown acts for halftime shows, as evidenced by Prince performing in Miami despite being from Minnesota.
