Shailene Woodley Will Perform Her Own Vocals as Janis Joplin in Upcoming Biopic
Shailene Woodley has confirmed she will perform her own vocals as Janis Joplin in the upcoming musical biopic, where she serves as both star and producer.

The project, seven years in development, will join other anticipated musical biopics featuring Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and Yacht Rock. During her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Woodley expressed her deep connection to Joplin's story, noting how the legendary singer "brought light to this planet in a singular way."
Initially apprehensive about singing, Woodley received crucial guidance from renowned music producer Linda Perry. Perry helped the actress discover her own voice through unconventional methods, including impromptu performances with full bands in empty warehouses. Rather than attempting to perfectly mimic Joplin's distinctive style, Perry encouraged Woodley to develop her own authentic approach to the material.
The California Film Commission has awarded the production a $2.5 million tax credit. The biopic is scheduled for a 30-day shoot with qualified expenditures estimated at $10 million.
