Americans spend 74% of their daily audio time listening to music, with the remaining time split between podcasts and other spoken-word content, according to new Edison Research data.

For listeners aged 13 and older, music consumption breaks down across platforms as follows:

  • AM/FM radio and radio streams: 32%
  • Streaming services (Spotify, Apple, Amazon, Pandora, YouTube): 28%
  • YouTube for music and music videos: 18%
  • SiriusXM: 9%
  • Owned music (vinyl, CD, digital files): 9%
  • Music channels on TV: 3%

For the 13-64 age group specifically, streaming services slightly edge out AM/FM radio, capturing 31% of music listening time.

This extensive music consumption makes sense given the vast libraries available across centuries of musical content, compared to the relatively recent emergence of podcasts and other audio formats.

Edison Research will present its complete Top 10 Findings of 2024 in a December 10 webinar, followed by the fifth anniversary Latino Podcast Listener Report on December 17, which will include new insights about Latino podcast listeners and feature video interviews with podcast creators.

Notes on methodology: Data collected by Edison Research focusing on US listeners aged 13 and older, measuring average daily audio consumption patterns across various platforms and formats.
