Meta has initiated another round of layoffs across multiple teams including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs as part of its ongoing effort to reallocate resources and optimize operations.

Affected employees include those working in Facebook, recruiting, legal operations, and design departments. Notable among those laid off is Jane Manchun Wong, known for uncovering unreleased features across Meta's apps, who had joined the Threads team last year.

The company is offering impacted employees either alternative positions under new contracts or severance packages, with many reportedly choosing the latter option.

This latest round of cuts follows Meta's significant workforce reductions in recent years:

  • 2022: 11,000 employees (13% of workforce) laid off
  • 2023: 10,000 employees laid off and 5,000 open positions eliminated

A Meta spokesperson stated: "Today, a few teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and location strategy. This includes moving some teams to different locations, and moving some employees to different roles."

Reports have emerged of some employees being terminated for misusing their $25 meal credits for non-food purchases, though this remains unconfirmed by official sources.
