The incident occurred during a packed autograph session when Micah Williams, also 26, allegedly shot Thomas from close range. Williams attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended by police in a nearby hotel lobby. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Curtis King, TBAAL's founder and director, identified Williams as a former participant in the academy's summer program approximately ten years ago. The motive for the shooting and any potential connection between Thomas and Williams remains unknown.

Williams has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and is being held at Dallas County Jail on a $200,000 bond.

Thomas remains hospitalized but is reportedly making progress. King described her as "strong, resilient, and a fighter," expressing confidence in her eventual return to performing.

In response to the incident, TBAAL announced plans to enhance security measures, including strengthening screening procedures and reducing entry points to prevent weapons from entering the venue.
