In a significant departure from tradition, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that the 2025 Oscars ceremony will not feature live performances of nominated songs. This announcement came via email to Academy members on January 22, just before the nominations reveal.

Instead of live performances, the Best Original Song category will focus on celebrating the songwriters through personal reflections from the creative teams. The decision comes amidst recent Los Angeles-area wildfires and follows a boycott of Spotify's Grammy celebration event by prominent songwriters.

The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O'Brien, will emphasize the collaborative nature of filmmaking. The ceremony will feature the return of "Fab 5" moments, where individual film artists recognize nominees, and will include musical moments that connect film's past to its future.

Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Young emphasized that the ceremony will celebrate the unifying spirit of moviemaking while acknowledging those who fought against the wildfires. The Academy has also provided resources for members to support ongoing relief efforts.
