Duane 'Keefe D' Davis has firmly denied any involvement in Tupac Shakur's 1996 murder during his first interview since his September 2023 arrest. Speaking to ABC News from Clark County Detention Center in Nevada, Davis claims he's being wrongfully accused and only made previous confessions because he was paid to lie.

Prosecutors allege Davis, a former Crips gang leader from Compton, California, orchestrated the drive-by shooting that killed Tupac Shakur on the Las Vegas strip. The shooting occurred when a car pulled up beside the BMW carrying Shakur and Suge Knight at a red light, firing multiple shots. Shakur died six days later.

The case against Davis largely relies on his own previous accounts of the murder, including:

  • Multiple police interviews
  • Public media appearances
  • His 2019 memoir "Compton Street Legend"

Davis now claims:

  • He never read the memoir, despite being listed as co-author
  • His co-author took creative liberties with the story
  • He was in Los Angeles, not Las Vegas, when the murder occurred
  • "They don't have no gun, no car, no Keefe D, no nothing"

The case is complicated by Davis' 2008 confession under a "proffer agreement" with investigators looking into Notorious B.I.G.'s murder. While this agreement protected him from prosecution at the time, it didn't extend to Las Vegas authorities who are now pursuing the case.

Vegas prosecutors have spent years corroborating Davis' previous narrative with additional evidence and witness accounts. The case is scheduled for jury trial in 11 months.
