The Wong Janice: From Corporate Life to Meditation Music - How a Silent Retreat Reignited Her Cello Career
The Wong Janice discovered her passion for cello at age eight, drawn to its rich sound that closely resembles the human voice. Coming from a Chinese background where playing musical instruments was common, she initially started with piano at age six before finding her true calling with the cello.
At thirteen, Janice's musical journey took an unexpected turn when a teacher encouraged her to play pop music with a band. This experience revealed her natural ability to replicate songs on cello, though a later audition highlighted her inability to improvise – a skill she then committed to developing.
Despite her talents, a music teacher's comment about her potential as a classical musician led Janice to pivot towards marketing. She earned a master's degree and landed a role at Adidas, working with major artists like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez.
Feeling stuck in her corporate career, Janice attended a ten-day silent meditation retreat that proved transformative. The experience taught her about letting go of suffering and unlocking personal liberation. When she subsequently lost her job, she saw it as an opportunity to return to music.
Janice enrolled at Abbey Road Institute in Amsterdam to study music production. Through careful self-reflection and market research, she discovered a unique niche: creating meditative cello music. This combination of her classical training and meditation experience led to rapid success, with multiple albums released through CD Baby.
Today, Janice approaches music with a philosophy of freedom rather than constant pursuit of more. Her goal is to create music that helps listeners find their own sense of liberation and peace, drawing from both her classical training and meditation practice.
She currently operates as a CD Baby Plus artist, managing her releases independently and maintaining a direct connection with her audience through meditative cello compositions that bridge classical expertise with modern wellness needs.
