In a recent Variety interview, Tesfaye explained that he feels The Weeknd persona has reached its peak, stating, "I'm closing the chapter on my existence as The Weeknd. It's a headspace I've gotta get into that I just don't have any more desire for."

A pivotal moment in this decision came during his 2022 Los Angeles concert when he lost his voice and had to reschedule. He reflected, "Part of me actually was thinking, 'You lost your voice because it's done; you said what you had to say.'"

Despite retiring The Weeknd moniker, Tesfaye remains committed to making music. He emphasizes that while no one will do The Weeknd better than him, he's ready for new challenges. "Everything needs to feel like a challenge. And for me right now, The Weeknd, whatever that is, it's been mastered."

The artist has already begun transitioning to his birth name on social media platforms. His upcoming projects include both the "Hurry Up Tomorrow" album and a companion Lionsgate film, scheduled for release in May.
