SXSW 2026 Shortens Festival Duration, Expands Music Programming
SXSW will run for a shorter duration starting in 2026, but the music festival portion will actually gain an additional night of performances. This change comes as the Austin Convention Center undergoes a $1.6 billion renovation project.

The renovations will begin April 1, 2025, with the Convention Center reopening for SXSW 2029. During this period, organizers are taking the opportunity to restructure the festival's format.
Key Changes for SXSW 2026:
- Interactive, film & TV, and music programs will run concurrently instead of across separate weekends
- The festival will be condensed into seven days
- Music showcases will expand from six to seven nights
- Fewer showcasing artists will be spread across more days
- Focus on creating a more curated experience while maintaining music discovery
"A shorter SX gives attendees more of a chance to be here for the entire run," a SXSW spokesperson explained. "Everyone will have a chance to experience the whole of SXSW."
While the music portion gains an additional night, some industry observers note this new concurrent format may create competition for attention between music performances and the increasingly popular Film & TV section of the festival.
