Musi App Store Ban Sparks Rise of YouTube Music Wrapper Clones
Musi app clones in App Store
Several alternative apps have emerged following Apple's removal of Musi, the popular YouTube wrapper app, from the App Store in September 2024. The removal came after YouTube complained about Musi violating its terms of service by bypassing advertising.
Musi, which had amassed 66 million downloads since 2016, allowed users to play YouTube videos while displaying its own ads. The app offered an in-app purchase option to remove ads completely.
In response to the removal, Musi has filed a lawsuit against Apple, claiming they don't violate YouTube's terms since they don't use YouTube's API. Instead, they argue their "augmentative interface" simply displays publicly available content while enhancing user experience through proprietary technology.
Current Musi users are experiencing issues with blocked playlists and inability to play songs, likely due to YouTube blocking access to Musi's servers.
A notable alternative gaining popularity is Music Si, which serves as a wrapper for both YouTube and SoundCloud. Similar to Musi, it offers ad removal through subscriptions ($2.99/month or $9.99/year). Music Si has quickly climbed from #244 to #120 in the App Store's Music category.
However, these alternative apps may face similar challenges from YouTube if they continue to operate under the same model that led to Musi's removal.
