In 1998, Gotti and his brother Chris established Murder Inc. Records as a Def Jam imprint, following Gotti's successful stint as an A&R executive who brought DMX to the label. The label's first major success came with Ja Rule's 1999 debut album "Venni Vetti Vecci."

Gotti's talent for spotting and developing artists led to the discovery of Ashanti, who dominated the charts in 2002 with multiple hits. His production work resulted in 28 Billboard Hot 100 charting songs, including collaborations with Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige, Fat Joe, and Kanye West.

Notable achievements include:

  • Grammy win in 2003 for producing Ashanti's debut album
  • Producer of Jennifer Lopez's #1 hits "I'm Real" and "Ain't It Funny"
  • Creation of Murder Inc.'s signature sound that defined early 2000s hip-hop and R&B

Former Def Jam executive Lyor Cohen praised Gotti as "one of its most creative soldiers who was hip-hop," acknowledging his crucial role in the label's success.

Despite legal challenges, including a 2003 federal investigation and recent allegations, Gotti's musical legacy and influence on hip-hop culture remain significant. His work helped shape the sound of modern hip-hop and R&B, launching numerous successful careers and creating timeless hits that continue to resonate with audiences.
