Mississippi Valley State University's marching band has successfully raised over $60,000 through GoFundMe to perform at the 60th Presidential Inauguration Parade on January 20. The band needs approximately $250,000 total to cover travel, accommodations, meals, and equipment costs.

The 'Mean Green Marching Machine,' consisting of 250 members, has received support from over 1,300 individual donors. MVSU is committed to ensuring all band members can participate regardless of their financial situation.
Dr. Jerryl Briggs, MVSU President, emphasized the significance: "This is not just a moment of pride for our university but for the entire state of Mississippi. It's an opportunity to showcase our legacy, celebrate our culture, and invest in the future leaders of our community."
The funds will support:
- New instruments
- Uniforms
- Student scholarships
- Essential resources for band development
The invitation has sparked debate online, with some critics questioning the university's decision to participate, particularly given the parade's scheduling on MLK Jr. Day. Others have expressed concerns about an HBCU's involvement in the event.
Despite the controversy, the university views this as an opportunity for students to witness the peaceful transition of power while gaining global exposure during the university's 75th anniversary celebration.
