Former One Direction singer Liam Payne, 31, died after falling from a third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, according to preliminary autopsy results released by Argentine authorities.

The forensic medical team of the Supreme Court of Justice of Argentina reported that Payne suffered "multiple trauma and internal and external bleeding" upon impact. The incident occurred while he was in Argentina to attend a concert by former bandmate Niall Horan.

Emergency services received a call at approximately 5:40 PM ET on Wednesday, October 16, reporting an "aggressive man" allegedly under the influence. Upon arrival, authorities found Payne unresponsive in the hotel's courtyard with severe head injuries.

Pablo Policicchio, communications director of the Ministry of Security of Buenos Aires, stated that Payne "had jumped from the balcony of his room." The investigation revealed:

• No other individuals were present in his room at the time
• Evidence of alcohol or drugs was found in the room
• His injuries suggest he fell in a "state of semi or total unconsciousness"
• There was no indication of defensive posturing during the fall

Payne had previously discussed his struggles with addiction and had recently celebrated six months of sobriety earlier this year. The investigation into the exact circumstances of his death continues.
