Long-time owner John Kunz is transitioning ownership to Caren Kelleher and Trey Watson while retaining a minority stake. The new location offers several improvements:

  • Larger space for events and performances
  • Improved parking facilities
  • Closer proximity to downtown music venues
  • 50% increase in retail space (from current 6,400 sq. ft.)
  • Enhanced stage area for in-store performances

Kelleher brings extensive industry experience as Founder & CEO of Gold Rush Vinyl, while Watson serves as CEO of Armadillo Records and President of Globe Entertainment & Media Corp.

The store's history dates back to April 1, 1982, when it first opened on South Lamar under the co-ownership of John Kunz and founder Louis Karp. Waterloo quickly established itself as an Austin institution, winning the Austin Chronicle's "Best Record Store" award in its first year. In 1987, Kunz became sole owner when Karp sold his 50% share.

Kunz expressed enthusiasm about the transition: "My decades-long hope has been for Waterloo Records & Video to live on forever, continuing to promote Austin's vibrant music culture and community. Now with this transition, all of my boxes are checked." The new ownership team is committed to preserving Waterloo's legacy while expanding its presence in Austin's music scene.
