According to Alabama Highway Patrol, Stone was traveling in a 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van when it flipped over and was struck by a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia truck. While the van's driver and seven other passengers survived and were taken to Baptist Medical Center, Stone was pronounced dead at the scene.
Stone's long-spanning career began in Columbia, South Carolina, where she sang in church from an early age. At 16, she co-founded The Sequence, the first all-female rap group on Sugar Hill Records, known for their hit "Funk You Up," which has been sampled by numerous artists including Dr. Dre.
Her successful solo career included notable achievements such as:
- "No More Rain (In This Cloud)" - topped Billboard's Adult R&B chart for 10 weeks
- Notable collaborations with Betty Wright ("Baby")
- Hit singles "Brotha" and "Wish I Didn't Miss You"
- Successful transition to Clive Davis' J Records in 2000
Stone was scheduled to perform at the CIAA Men's Championship basketball game halftime show on the day of her passing. Her children, Diamond and Michael Archer, released a statement expressing their devastation at the unexpected loss.
"We are truly devastated by this unexpected and unfortunate tragedy," said Walter Millsap III, Stone's longtime manager, who received the news from Stone's daughter Diamond and former The Sequence member Blondy.
