Federal Judge Reduces T.I. and Tiny's OMG Girlz Lawsuit Award from $71.4M to $17M
A federal judge is considering reducing T.I. and Tiny Harris' lawsuit payout against MGA Entertainment from $71.4 million to $17 million over their LOL Surprise! OMG dolls case.
Federal judge ruling on OMG lawsuit
The original verdict awarded the Harris family $17.8 million in real damages and $53.6 million in punitive damages after they sued MGA Entertainment for allegedly copying their girl group OMG Girlz's likeness in their doll line.
Judge James Selna stated there wasn't sufficient evidence to prove the toymaker acted in bad faith, which would justify the punitive damages. He's considering a 75% reduction in the total payout, though no final decision has been made.
The lawsuit found seven dolls in the LOL Surprise! OMG line violated the group's likeness, with testimony from the couple's daughter Star and her former bandmates supporting the claims.
T.I. expressed to Rolling Stone that MGA Entertainment "ripped us off" and expected them not to defend themselves. The company denied all copyright infringement allegations and accused the couple of being "extortionists."

The case continues as Judge Selna stated, "There's a lot to contemplate. I want to put this down for a couple days, and I want to come back to it fresh from the top."
