Deezer has partnered with SACEM to implement its 'artist-centric payment system' (ACPS) for publishing rights in France, marking the first major update to streaming remuneration models for publishing since the advent of music streaming.

The new model introduces a double-payment structure for qualifying artists:

  • Artists must achieve 1,000 streams from 500 different subscribers monthly
  • Songs discovered through active search or non-algorithmic playlists receive double compensation
  • The system aims to reward genuine artists while deterring fraudulent streaming activity

Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier emphasizes that this model ensures a higher share of subscriber payments goes directly to artists they actively listen to, while implementing safeguards against streaming manipulation.

SACEM CEO Cécile Rap-Veber supports the initiative, noting that the ACPS promotes more equitable revenue distribution by:

  • Rewarding authentic music creation
  • Excluding artificial noise
  • Better representing diverse musical genres and aesthetics

This expansion follows Deezer's successful implementation of ACPS for recorded music in 2023. Both organizations expect this model to influence other industry players, potentially establishing a new standard for fair artist compensation in the streaming era.

The partnership also extends to collaborative efforts in AI development, with both companies supporting the Ed Newton Rex initiative to ensure responsible technological advancement in the music industry.
