African streaming platform Boomplay has partnered with MTN Ghana to integrate premium streaming services with telecom data plans. This collaboration marks a significant development for music streaming accessibility in Africa.

Boomplay, which currently serves 70 million monthly active users and offers a library of 90 million tracks, will now be available to MTN Ghana's 22 million customers through various subscription packages. The partnership includes monthly, weekly, and daily service options, all offering unlimited offline playback of downloaded songs.

Elizabeth Ntiamoah-Quarshie, Boomplay Ghana GM, emphasized that MTN subscribers will access their extensive music catalog at reduced rates compared to regular data plans, making music streaming more affordable and accessible.

The streaming platform has also expanded its presence through:

  • Opening a new office in Ivory Coast
  • Partnering with France's Generations Radio for a weekly "Top Africa Charts" program
  • Offering both French live broadcasts and English podcast versions of the show

This development comes amid significant growth in Africa's music industry, with major players like Warner Music acquiring Africori and Universal Music launching Virgin Music Label & Artist Services in the region. Competitor Mdundo has also gained traction, reaching 21.5 million monthly active users, with 30% based in Nigeria.

The African music streaming landscape continues to evolve, with Mdundo targeting 50 million monthly users by mid-2025, indicating strong growth potential in the market of over 1.2 billion people.
