Mercer claims he recorded vocals for the track alongside producer Jake One (Jacob Dutton), who is officially credited on the song. The lawsuit states that Mercer never transferred his rights to Dutton or any other parties before the song's release.

Key points of the lawsuit:

  • In July 2019, Playboi Carti's team offered Mercer a 5% ownership interest in "Kelly K"
  • Mercer signed the agreement on January 24th, 2020
  • Despite the agreement, Mercer claims he hasn't received any payment or accounting
  • After failed attempts to resolve the issue via email and certified mail, Mercer is suing for:
    • Copyright infringement
    • Publicity-right violations (California law)
    • Breach of contract
    • Unjust enrichment

The defendants named in the lawsuit include:

  • Playboi Carti (Jordan Carter)
  • Cash Carti Music
  • Universal Music
  • Interscope Records

"Kelly K" currently has over 55 million streams on Spotify. Playboi Carti has not publicly addressed the lawsuit, while continuing to prepare for his upcoming third studio album "I Am Music," whose lead single "All Red" was released in September.
