African streaming service Mdundo, now serving around 36 million monthly active users, projects royalty payments exceeding $1 million in 2025. The Nairobi-based platform has shown significant growth in both user base and revenue, with earnings increasing from $295,827 in 2021 to $1.92 million in 2023.

The platform has already distributed royalties to 156,000 music professionals and expects to pay between $1.1 million and $1.3 million to artists in the coming year. While these figures may seem modest compared to global streaming giants, they represent significant income for local artists and contribute to the growth of Africa's music industry.

Mdundo operates across ten African countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Angola, and Rwanda. The company is focusing on "hyperlocal markets" to maximize impact for both artists and advertisers, specifically targeting:

  • Hausa media in Nigeria
  • Kalenjin and Kamba music in Kenya
  • Selected markets in Uganda

CEO Martin Nielsen emphasizes the company's commitment to delivering consistent earnings while supporting Africa's musical ecosystem. The strategy appears to be working, as evidenced by a 5.8% increase in Mdundo's stock value (CPH: MDUNDO).

The platform's next annual report is scheduled for October 7th, which will provide further insights into its market position and growth trajectory. Meanwhile, the African music streaming market continues to evolve, with other platforms like Boomplay securing significant partnerships, including a recent distribution agreement with YG Entertainment.
