The government firmly states that race played no role in the charges against Combs, which include transportation to engage in prostitution, sex trafficking, and racketeering. Instead, they assert the indictment stems from "the defendant's decades of criminal conduct."
Combs' legal team had previously filed a motion focusing on the Mann Act charge, claiming no white person has ever been targeted under this law, which prohibits transporting women for sex. They argued that "Mr. Combs has been singled out because he is a powerful Black man, and he is being prosecuted for conduct that regularly goes unpunished."
The defense also alleges that federal prosecutors have been leaking information to the media, claiming the government's handling of the case "demonstrates bias and animus" and "plays on racist tropes."
The government strongly denies these accusations, with prosecutors previously calling similar claims "baseless" during an October pre-trial hearing. They warned that such accusations pose a "serious risk" to conducting a fair trial.
The trial is scheduled to begin on May 5, with Combs' team maintaining that all sexual activity between him and others was consensual.
