Twitter/X has requested a three-week extension to respond to the copyright infringement lawsuit filed by the National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA). The social media platform now has until April 9th to file its response, with NMPA's counsel consenting to the extension.

The court previously rejected Twitter's motion to dismiss the case entirely on March 5th, though some of NMPA's claims were dismissed. The remaining lawsuit focuses on:

  • Contributory infringement allegations regarding "forgiving treatment" for verified users
  • Twitter's response time to takedown notices
  • The platform's handling of repeat copyright infringers

This case adds to NMPA's history of copyright litigation against tech platforms, including:

  • A 2021 settlement with Roblox
  • A 2022 lawsuit against Vinkle's parent company (still ongoing)

The initial case management conference has been rescheduled from March 1st to June 7th, with no trial date set yet.

In related news, Bad Bunny recently filed a complaint against a Spanish fan for posting unauthorized concert footage from his Most Wanted Tour on YouTube. While the specific videos have been removed and the account deactivated, similar unauthorized uploads continue to appear on various platforms.

The changing scope of the Twitter/X case following the partial dismissal necessitates additional time for the platform to assess its response. The court is expected to approve the extension request, with the case proceeding based on the remaining infringement claims.
