TikTok Vanishes From App Stores Despite Service Restoration, Leaving Users Unable to Download or Update
ByteDance restored TikTok service in the United States, but users cannot download or update the app as it remains unavailable on Apple's App Store and Google Play Store. This situation could lead to 'app rot' - where the app's functionality degrades without regular updates and bug fixes.

While President Trump signed an executive order delaying the TikTok ban enforcement by 75 days, major tech companies are maintaining the app's removal due to potential financial penalties. Under President Biden's signed law, platforms could face fines of $5,000 per user for making TikTok available after January 19.
The ban affects multiple ByteDance-owned apps, including:
- TikTok and TikTok-related apps (Studio, Shop Seller Center)
- CapCut
- Lemon8
- Hypic
- Lark applications
- Gauth: AI Study Companion
- Marvel Snap
Current TikTok users can still access the app on their devices. However, without the ability to update, users may experience:
- No access to new features
- Unresolved bugs and security issues
- Degraded performance over time
- No in-app purchase capabilities
Senator Tom Cotton, chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, warned that companies facilitating TikTok access could face "hundreds of billions of dollars of ruinous liability." The law includes a five-year statute of limitations, allowing future administrations to enforce violations.
