RedNote, a Chinese social media app known as Xiaohongshu in China, has surged to the top of the Apple App Store as TikTok users seek alternatives ahead of the impending US ban.

Launched in 2013, RedNote combines short-form videos, pictures, and text posts across three main feeds: "follow," "explore," and "nearby." The platform has grown from a shopping-oriented service to amass over 300 million monthly active users and achieved $1 billion in profit last year.

However, users migrating to RedNote may face similar issues, as the US law targeting TikTok could affect other Chinese-owned apps, including RedNote, WeChat, and ByteDance's Lemon8 and CapCut. The law requires ByteDance to sell TikTok to an American company by January 19 or face a ban.

While Frank McCourt and Kevin O'Leary's People's Bid has made a formal offer to purchase TikTok, ByteDance maintains it's not interested in selling. With the Supreme Court currently reviewing the ban and President-elect Trump not taking office until after the deadline, US-based creators might be better served by migrating to domestic platforms like Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.
