TikTok is testing an expanded version of its Add to Music App feature that now includes full-album pre-saves, building upon its existing song-saving capabilities for services like Spotify and Apple Music.

The feature, which launched about a year ago and recently expanded to 163 additional countries in February, allows users to automatically add upcoming albums to their music library upon release. Early testing shows users can pre-save upcoming releases like Blackpink's Rosé's December album "Rosie" on major streaming platforms.

This expansion comes at a challenging time for TikTok, as the platform faces:

  • A January 19th deadline to either sell or shut down U.S. operations under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act
  • Legal challenges from multiple U.S. states regarding child safety concerns
  • Recent lawsuits in Brazil seeking $530 million in damages over data protection and mental health issues
  • Licensing uncertainties following a split with Merlin, affecting relationships with independent music labels

The platform also faces increasing competition from YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and emerging platforms like Triller, Loops, and Connyct. The success of the album pre-save feature will largely depend on TikTok's ability to navigate these challenges while maintaining its significant influence in music discovery and promotion.
