Meta's Threads platform is reportedly developing a music integration feature, allowing users to add music to their posts similar to Facebook and Instagram's functionality.

This development comes as TikTok faces a potential ban in the United States, presenting an opportunity for Threads to capture some of the music discovery market. Reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi first discovered references to the music feature in the app's code, though it's not yet available in public beta.

Additional platform improvements are also in development, including:

  • Custom display name options
  • Profile cover image functionality
  • Enhanced profile customization features

This music integration could provide a new revenue stream for music owners, particularly significant as X (formerly Twitter) has declined to license music for its platform. The timing is notable, as X recently won a partial victory in court regarding a $250 million lawsuit from major music publishers including Sony Music and Universal Music.

The Biden administration has indicated that enforcement of any TikTok ban would fall to the incoming Trump administration, with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew scheduled to attend Trump's January 20 inauguration as a guest of honor.

These updates suggest Threads is evolving to compete more directly with platforms like X and Bluesky while potentially filling the music discovery void that could be left by TikTok's possible ban.
