TechStars Music Accelerator Shuts Down, Citing Need for Broader Entertainment Focus
TechStars Music Accelerator shut down
TechStars Music, a prominent startup accelerator program, has ceased operations, with Managing Director Bob Moczydlowsky confirming the closure due to an outdated business model.
The accelerator's limitations became apparent in two key areas:
- Restricted capital availability for startups
- Narrow focus on music-specific technology
Moczydlowsky explained that the "music" label restricted their ability to invest in broader entertainment solutions, often attracting narrowly-focused music tech startups instead of companies solving larger entertainment industry problems.
The final class of startups funded by TechStars Music in April 2022 included:
- Beatmatch
- Circle Labs
- Clever.fm
- Green Room
- KEIphone
- Music Games Company
- Musicasa
- Brij
- Radia
- Solace Vision
The program's structure involved:
- Open application process
- Multiple rounds of interviews
- Selection of 25-30 companies for final screening
- Final selection of 10 companies for funding
- 13-week mentorship from 300+ industry professionals
- Culminating in an invite-only Venture Summit
Moving forward, the organization plans to shift focus toward funding the future of entertainment, self-expression, and live events, moving beyond traditional music technology investments.
