Stephen King Urges Oscars Cancellation Due to Los Angeles Wildfires, Won't Vote
Stephen King is calling for the cancellation of the 2025 Academy Awards due to the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires. The acclaimed author announced on Bluesky that he won't be voting this year, stating "No glitz with Los Angeles on fire."
King joins "Hacks" star Jean Smart in suggesting the Academy should redirect Oscar ceremony funds toward wildfire relief efforts. However, The Hollywood Reporter confirms the Academy plans to proceed with the March 2 ceremony as scheduled.
The Academy leadership believes the show should continue while incorporating fundraising efforts for fire relief. They view the ceremony as an opportunity to raise awareness and financial support for rebuilding efforts in affected areas.
Some industry members have pushed back against cancellation proposals, noting that entertainment workers have already faced significant financial hardships due to COVID-19 and recent union strikes. Critics argue the ceremony could provide needed positivity while supporting industry professionals.
