Sonos Scraps Plans for Premium Streaming Video Player 'Pinewood'
Sonos has officially canceled development of its streaming video player, codenamed 'Pinewood,' which was scheduled for release in late 2025. This decision comes amid significant company changes, including the departure of CEO Patrick Spence and the appointment of interim CEO Tom Conrad.

The Pinewood device was intended to compete with high-end streaming boxes like Apple TV, offering:
- Universal search and content aggregation
- HDMI switching capabilities
- Gaming console pass-through support
- Enhanced surround sound configurations
- Integration with major streaming apps
The cancellation was announced during an all-hands company meeting, with team members being reassigned to other projects. This leaves Sonos without a major product launch for the latter half of 2025. The company is now focusing on improving its recently revamped app, which has faced criticism from users for missing features present in the previous version.
The project, championed by Chief Innovation Officer Nick Millington, was to run on The Trade Desk's operating system. When asked for comment, Sonos only confirmed their ongoing relationship with The Trade Desk, stating, "We don't comment on our roadmap, but as has been previously announced we have a long-standing relationship with The Trade Desk and that relationship continues."
The decision appears well-received by long-time Sonos customers, particularly on Reddit, where users have expressed ongoing concerns about the company's new app functionality. Many employees had privately expressed doubts about Pinewood's potential success in the highly competitive streaming device market, which is dominated by established players like Apple, Google, Amazon, and Roku.
