Rihanna's Record Label: Which Company Does She Call Home?
Rihanna is currently signed to two major record labels: Def Jam Recordings and Roc Nation. Her journey with record labels has evolved throughout her career, and I'll explain the details of her label associations.
Rihanna initially signed with Def Jam Recordings in 2005, when she was just 16 years old. This signing came after her audition for Jay-Z, who was then president of Def Jam. During her time with Def Jam, she released seven studio albums, from "Music of the Sun" (2005) to "Unapologetic" (2012).
In 2014, Rihanna made a significant move by transitioning to Roc Nation for management, while maintaining her recording contract with Def Jam. Roc Nation, founded by Jay-Z, has since handled both her management and music distribution.
The current arrangement is actually a partnership between the two labels. Rihanna's music is released through Roc Nation/Def Jam, combining the strengths of both industry powerhouses. This dual association has proven beneficial for her career, providing both the established infrastructure of Def Jam and the innovative approach of Roc Nation.
It's worth noting that Rihanna also founded her own imprint, Westbury Road Entertainment, in 2015. While this doesn't replace her major label affiliations, it gives her additional creative control over her music releases.
Recent releases, including her 2022 single "Lift Me Up" from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack, were released under this combined Roc Nation/Def Jam partnership, confirming her ongoing relationship with both labels.
