The Argentinian prosecutor's office confirms Payne died from internal and external bleeding, along with multiple traumas, after falling from the third floor of the Casa Sur hotel. Five witnesses reported Payne was alone during the incident, and investigators found evidence of alcohol and drug use in his room.
The incident occurred around 5 PM local time on Wednesday. Hotel guests reported hearing disturbing noises throughout the day, including banging and shouting. A hotel receptionist contacted emergency services about an "aggressive man" potentially under the influence, shortly before the fall.
Payne was visiting Buenos Aires for a concert by former bandmate Niall Horan. The 16-year-old rose to fame in 2010 when One Direction was formed on "The X Factor." Fellow band members Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik have not yet commented on his death, nor has Cheryl Tweedy, the mother of his child.
