Merlin Warns UK's AI Training Law Could Cost Indies $200M, Threatens Human Artistry
Merlin Networks, representing independent music companies, has strongly opposed the UK's proposed AI training law that would allow AI developers to train models on copyrighted works without permission. The organization warns this could cause over $200 million in annual damages to independent artists through lost revenue.

According to Merlin CEO Jeremy Sirota, this proposal would enable large tech corporations to exploit independent artists' work without consent or compensation. The organization argues that AI should enhance human creativity rather than devalue it.

The Make It Fair campaign, supported by numerous music industry stakeholders, continues to push for alternative approaches that protect creators' rights while fostering responsible AI development. Recent reports suggest the UK government may revise its approach in response to this widespread opposition.
