Madlib, the renowned producer and DJ, has filed a lawsuit against his longtime manager Eothen Alapatt (known professionally as Egon) for alleged mismanagement and breach of fiduciary duty.
Key allegations in the lawsuit include:
- Egon's improper control over Madicine Show and Rapp Cats, two companies established to manage Madlib's career and merchandise
- Unauthorized insertion of Now-Again Records as a middleman with distributor Ingrooves
- Undocumented "consulting" and "reimbursement" payments totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars
- Lack of transparency regarding several million dollars in company deposits
- Failure to provide complete financial records and documentation
- Restricted access to Madlib's social media accounts
- Conflicts of interest in legal and accounting representation
A forensic accounting investigation covering 2018-2022 revealed multiple financial irregularities in both companies' operations.
Madlib seeks:
- Dissolution of both Madicine Show and Rapp Cats
- Termination of all rights granted to these companies
- Return of control over his recorded music and trademarks
The lawsuit comes approximately 14 years after Madlib left Stones Throw Records in an effort to gain more control over his music career.
