Lo-Fi Chill Music Channels Are Increasingly Run by AI, Investigation Reveals
Lo-fi music channels on YouTube are increasingly using artificial intelligence to generate their content, raising questions about authenticity and artist attribution in the genre.
Derrick Gee, a TikTok music influencer, recently investigated the "what is ?" channel, which has gained over 130,000 subscribers since September 2024. The channel's hour-long lo-fi jazz instrumental mixes lack artist credits, unlike legitimate curators such as the Odysseus channel that provides comprehensive track listings and artist attribution.
Lo-fi music meets artificial intelligence
Evidence suggesting AI generation includes:
- A liked comment mentioning Suno (an AI music generator)
- Subsequent removal of AI-related comments
- No artist credits in track listings
- Consistent sound patterns typical of AI-generated music
YouTube's current policy only requires AI disclosure when content could be mistaken for real people, places, scenes, or events. The platform allows monetization of AI-generated content, which may lead to an increase in AI-generated lo-fi music channels.
Using AI tools like Suno, creators can generate lo-fi tracks by simply inputting keywords like "chill lo-fi instrumental." While lo-fi music's appeal often lies in its repetitive beats for background listening, this trend raises concerns about the impact on human musicians who create original lo-fi content.
