While authorities have ruled out foul play, the exact cause of death remains under investigation pending autopsy results. His body was discovered after what officials described as a "significant amount of time" had passed.
Wheesung rose to prominence in 2002, becoming one of South Korea's most influential R&B voices. His hits including "With Me," "Insomnia," and "Even Thought of Marriage" showcased his distinctive vocal style and earned both critical acclaim and commercial success. He was scheduled to perform in Daegu this weekend with singer KCM.
The artist's career was complicated by personal struggles, including a 2021 conviction for propofol abuse resulting in a two-year suspended sentence. In 2020, he was found unconscious twice with syringes and etomidate, though he later sought treatment.
Fellow artists have shared tributes, with collaborator Yoon Min-soo writing: "Wheesung, let's sing and make music freely in that place. I won't forget your pure and clear heart." Rapper Verbal Jint added: "Every moment we shared was an honor. You've worked so hard. Rest in peace, Wheesung."
The investigation continues as fans and the Korean music industry mourn the loss of this influential voice in K-pop and R&B. Further details are expected following the completion of the autopsy.
