Indie Artist Reveals: Peloton Pays 10x More Per Stream Than Spotify
Peloton surprisingly offers significantly higher streaming payouts compared to major music platforms, with indie artists reporting earnings up to 10 times more than Spotify's rates.
Independent artist Steven Cravis recently received $1,078.46 for 26,456 streams on Peloton, calculating to approximately $0.0407 per stream. This rate significantly exceeds the per-stream payouts from major streaming platforms:
- Peloton: $0.0407 per stream
- Tidal: $0.0088 per stream
- Apple Music: $0.0068 per stream
- Spotify: $0.0035 per stream
- YouTube: $0.0015 per stream

Cravis's success came from a single track titled "Dark Crystal" under the artist name Happy Halloween Music, which was featured in a Halloween-themed Peloton cycling class playlist. While this same track earned zero revenue on Spotify due to new streaming requirements, it generated over $1,000 on Peloton in October alone.
This payment disparity highlights a significant contrast in streaming platform compensation models. Spotify's recent policy change requires tracks to accumulate at least 1,000 streams within 12 months to qualify for royalty payments, potentially affecting legitimate artists like Cravis who may not meet these thresholds.
While Peloton's reach is considerably smaller than major streaming platforms, its higher payout rate offers a valuable alternative revenue stream for artists, particularly those featured in themed workout playlists.
