The Recording Academy (NARAS) filed an $86,000 lawsuit against FX Group, LLC, their longtime Grammy Awards program printer, over an unpaid bill from a broken printing agreement. However, the legal action quickly backfired.

A federal judge in the Central District of California dismissed the case within just four days, citing lack of subject matter jurisdiction. The judge noted that while the complaint inadequately alleged jurisdiction, NARAS could potentially amend and refile the case.

The dismissal likely cost NARAS significantly more in legal fees than the disputed $86,000, as they retained prominent law firm Proskauer Rose LLP for the case. The situation may escalate further, as FX Group could pursue a countersuit due to potential reputational damage from the public filing.

The case highlights how relatively small disputes can balloon into costly legal battles that ultimately benefit neither party - except perhaps their attorneys.
