Ed Sheeran Settles ‘The Rest Of Our Life’ Song Theft Lawsuit
Ed Sheeran has settled a copyright infringement lawsuit over 'The Rest Of Our Life,' a song he co-wrote for Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. Australian songwriters Sean Carey and Beau Golden claimed the song copied their work 'When I Found You,' which they wrote for artist Jasmine Rae.
The lawsuit alleged "verbatim, note-for-note copying" of original elements from their song. The case was particularly notable as the plaintiffs were represented by Richard Busch, who previously won the high-profile 'Blurred Lines' case against Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke.
The parties have agreed "in principle" to settle the case, with final dismissal expected within 30 days once remaining issues are resolved. The settlement was disclosed in a letter filed with the US District Court in Manhattan.
This resolution marks one fewer legal challenge for Sheeran, who continues to face other copyright claims, including:
- A lawsuit from Ed Townsend's estate regarding 'Let's Get It On'
- Multiple additional claims related to alleged song copying
The settlement demonstrates the ongoing challenges musicians face regarding copyright infringement claims in the modern music industry, particularly for successful artists like Sheeran who frequently face such allegations.
