The British government has abandoned plans to ban smoking outside pubs, clubs, and cafes following strong opposition from the hospitality industry. While the new Tobacco and Vapes Bill introduces strict anti-smoking measures, including bans near schools, hospitals, and playgrounds, the hospitality sector will be exempt.

The decision comes after the British Beer and Pub Association warned that outdoor smoking bans would have a "devastating impact" on venues already struggling with rising costs. The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) welcomed the government's revised approach, noting it better balances public health concerns with economic realities.

Health Minister Wes Streeting emphasized the legislation's primary goal of reducing pressure on the National Health Service (NHS), stating it will "save thousands of lives." The bill notably focuses on preventing young people from smoking while maintaining existing freedoms for hospitality venues.

Michael Kill, CEO of NTIA, praised the decision as a recognition of venues' role as "controlled, socially responsible spaces within communities." The revised legislation allows pubs, bars, and clubs to continue operating while respecting patron choices and community wellbeing.
