A major pet food recall has been issued for Savage Pet raw cat food products due to potential H5N1 (bird flu) contamination, following a similar recall earlier this month.

Affected Products:

  • Savage Cat Food Large Chicken Boxes (84 oz.) – Best by 11/15/2026
  • Savage Cat Food Small Chicken Boxes (21 oz.) – Best by 11/15/2026

The FDA is investigating connections between raw pet food and bird flu spread in cats. While no human cases have been reported from handling pet food, the recall serves as a precautionary measure.

Watch for these symptoms in cats:

  • Fever or lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Eye or nose discharge
  • Inflamed eyes
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Tremors, stiff movements, or seizures
  • Blindness

If your cat shows any symptoms, contact a veterinarian immediately.

Steps for pet owners:

  1. Stop using the recalled products immediately
  2. Dispose of food in sealed bags
  3. Sanitize food bowls and contact surfaces
  4. Monitor pets for symptoms
  5. Contact manufacturer for refund/replacement

Safety Precautions:

  • No current evidence of human H5N1 transmission from pet food
  • CDC recommends thorough hand washing after handling pet food
  • Continue monitoring FDA and CDC updates

The FDA is actively investigating pet food-related illnesses. Pet owners should remain vigilant about their pets' food sources and report any concerning symptoms to their veterinarian.
